Ages/Grade(s) Recommendation: Grades 1-3

Class Summary: In the English language, letters in the alphabet represent certain sounds. A good reader starts with the alphabetic principle, leading into phonics which builds upon necessary mechanics for literacy skills and accuracy that will last a lifetime. In this class, we will form the foundations necessary for reading fluently by first learning letter recognition with matching sounds (phonics) and combining individual or groups of letters to make blends, and finally whole words. In the second semester, students will be reading sentences for clarity, can practice simple spelling patterns, and be able to narrate back what they have read (reading comprehension). Weekly memorization of sight word skill-building will be included. Heavy emphasis on a love of learning to read from class exercises and read-aloud time with the instructor and aids who will make every effort to give individual time to each student. The objective of this class is to create a classroom full of avid, life-long readers who now possess the phonetic tools to read any English word or document in the future.

Time: 1pm-1:45pm
